I spent last week in Daytona Beach, Florida with my little sister Kati, three of her closest friends, my mom, and Lucy to celebrate Kati's last spring break. It was wonderful to get a change of scenery and spend the days lounging and working and eating and laughing with some of my favorite people.
Lucy loved the beach and the birds, and she was an absolute dream while we were there. I tried to keep to her normal schedule as much as possible, and everyone was super helpful in that regard. The girls couldn't get enough of her and she was pretty smitten, too. I've known one of Kati's girlfriends since she was a toddler, and to see how they've all grown - to sit and watch them play with Lucy and remember them at her age - was a beautiful and strange experience.
Thanks to my mom's abundant generosity, there was ample time for lounging and playing and sunning even though I still had lots of work to get done. We woke up each morning with Lucy to watch the sunrise and drink coffee, and then the seven of us would go to the beach for most of the day. Lucy napped and I worked and then we'd all either make dinner in the room or go out to eat. In between, I took lots of photos and maybe a video or ten.
I can't believe Kati is graduating next month. She was just starting first grade when I left for college back in 2003 (which still sounds like only a few years ago, rather than over a decade, to my 29-year old ears). And now she's eighteen and (almost) all grown up.
So Lucy will be a toddler forever, that's what I've decided. Time, you can go back to where you came from.
